ComScore released a stat in 2016, saying 50% of search will likely be done via voice by 2020. We are no where near this percentage. Voice search in its current state is a novelty. It is mostly used for general knowledge queries or retrieving specific snippets of information. While 9% of global consumers use Smart Voice Assistants to shop online every week (likely via direct communication with online retail stores), the devices are hampered by an inability to explore the web overall via search. Voice search is a “single search result” tool, it is difficult to really search with it. In most cases today, voice search only plays a minor role in the grand scheme of SEO and search. That said, we still need to recognise the role it plays (if any) in a digital strategy and optimise for use cases. How often do you use voice search?
